Non-surgical fat reduction with CoolSculpting® effective

CoolSculpting® is an effective and non-invasive fat reduction and body contouring treatment. It uses advanced cryolipolysis (fat freezing) technology to remove unwanted fat cells in targeted body areas for a redefined and slimmer appearance. It involves no surgery and typically has minimal downtime after treatment.

The results are noticeable and long-lasting, helping to remove unwanted pockets of fat, including those from stubborn areas that are resistant to both diet and exercise. These typically present as love handles, double chin and excess fat in the abdomen, upper arm, and inner thigh areas. Coolsculpt is the leading device in this field, with an estimated 7 million CoolSculpting® treatment cycles performed worldwide (American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, 2016).

Body contouring with CoolSculpting®

icon-clock How long is the CoolSculpting® cryolipolysis procedure?

A detailed consultation is undertaken at your first appointment for a tailored treatment strategy with a holistic approach.

The duration of your CoolSculpting® procedure depends on the number of areas being treated but is typically 40-60 minutes. Sloane Clinic is one of the few clinics in Europe to offer DualSculpting™, which halves treatment time. We also offer the innovative CoolAdvantage™ applicator, treating two areas in just 35 minutes (neither DualSculpting™ nor CoolAdvantage™ can be used on double chins).

icon-needle How comfortable is CoolSculpting® fat freezing treatment?

CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive treatment that does not involve surgery or needles. A gel pad and applicator are applied to the areas of concern, delivering controlled cooling to the targeted fat. In the first few minutes, you may experience cold, tingling, mild stinging, aching, or cramping. Most of the applicators use a vacuum to draw fat into the applicator cup, so you may also feel some pulling, tugging, or mild pinching as suction is applied. However, all of these sensations greatly reduce as the area becomes numb.

icon-heart How long is the recovery time?

There is minimal downtime after a CoolSculpting® procedure. Indeed, patients are often able to return to their work or normal activities almost directly after the treatment.

Following the procedure, the areas will be massaged for a few minutes, and you may feel some stinging or tingling while this is performed. Patients may also experience some of the following symptoms: redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, skin sensitivity, and numbness. Patients who have had treatment for “double chin” in the submental area may experience a sensation of fullness in the back of the throat.

However, these symptoms vary considerably between individuals as well as depending on the site, the number of areas, and duration of treatment. Most importantly, all of the effects are temporary and generally resolve within days or weeks

icon-eye When will I see results?

The results are not immediate, as it can take several weeks to months for the fat cells to be removed from your body after undergoing cryolipolysis. Nevertheless, results may be noticeable as early as four to six weeks with progressive improvement up to 14-16 weeks after that as you continue to flush out fat cells. Once the fat cells are destroyed by crystallisation, they are removed permanently and are not replaced.

As long as you maintain a healthy body weight, your results should remain stable long-term. However, after either CoolSculpting® or surgical liposuction, it is still possible to gain weight in the treatment area. Although the number of fat cells is reduced, the remaining fat cells can become larger if you consume excess calories or don’t expend as many calories as before.

icon-calendar How many sessions will I need?

We will design a treatment plan that is tailored to your body fat distribution and fat reduction goals to help you lose stubborn fat pockets, reshape your body, and achieve the results that you want. This may mean treating more than one body area or the same area more than once, depending on the size of the fat deposit. Consequently, some patients may only need one session, whereas others may require a few sessions to achieve optimal results. During your initial consultation, you will be advised about the number of sessions that you will likely need.

Disclaimer: Individual results and reactions may vary and can be affected by factors such as diet, fluctuations in body weight, physiology, metabolism, physical activity and medication.

  • What is CoolSculpting® fat loss treatment?

CoolSculpting® removes unwanted pockets of fat, including those from stubborn areas that are resistant to both diet and exercise. The result is a redefined and slimmer appearance that is noticeable and long-lasting.

CoolSculpting® delivers cooling to target the fat cells underneath the skin in a precisely controlled and safe manner. Fat cells are crystallised (frozen) so that they are permanently destroyed (a process called cryolipolysis). These dead fat cells are naturally eliminated over time by your body for a progressive, permanent reduction in the fat in the areas treated.

  • CoolSculpting® versus regular diet controlled weight loss

After dieting and weight loss, fat cells decrease in size, but the number of fat cells remains the same. In other words, losing weight does not make fat cells go away. Similarly, when you gain weight, there is no increase in the number of fat cells; instead, the fat cells get bigger.

By contrast, both CoolSculpting® and surgical liposuction work by permanently reducing the number of fat cells in the area of the body treated. Areas of untreated will have no change in fat cell distribution.

Coolsculpting® (and even surgical liposuction) should be viewed as an effective, long-lasting method to eliminate pockets of unwanted fat for body contouring and not as a weight-loss procedure. Coolsculpting® is particularly beneficial for getting rid of stubborn areas of fat that are more resistant to standard diet and exercise.

  • Who is a good candidate for CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting® should not be regarded as a replacement for a healthy diet and exercise, nor is it a treatment for obesity. However, patients with stubborn unwanted pockets of fat in targeted areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, chin, and upper arms are likely to be good candidates for this procedure, especially those seeking a non-surgical alternative to liposuction.

There are nevertheless specific medical contraindications to CoolSculpting®, including patients who have a history of cryoglobulinaemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria.

During your consultation, we will discuss the treatment in detail, taking a medical history and assessing both your whole body as well as your specific areas of concern and determining your suitability for treatment.

  • Which areas can be treated with CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting® can sculpt and contour different areas of the body, and has been approved by the FDA in the US for use in the following areas:

    • Submental region (“double chin”)
    • Thighs
    • Abdomen
    • Flanks (“love handles”)
    • Bra fat
    • Back fat
    • Underneath the buttocks (“banana roll”)
    • Upper arms (“bingo wings”)
  • A tailored body contouring treatment plan

During your consultation, we will develop a customised treatment plan tailored to your body and individual goals.

We will carefully assess your relevant medical history (including any previous fat reduction treatments) as well as your dietary history and treatment expectations. A measurement of your BMI (body mass index) will be taken, and an in-depth assessment of your overall body fat distribution will be made. Your specific areas of concern will then be examined, looking at neighbouring fat areas as well. High quality standardised medical photographs will be taken to provide a baseline record for comparison against post-treatment images for an accurate, quantifiable assessment of treatment progress.

We take a holistic approach to body contouring. For some patients, this may mean treating more than one body area to achieve a balanced reduction and a more natural contour. Patients may also be referred to our dietician team to optimise and maintain the results (neither liposuction nor CoolSculpt® are weight loss treatments; they are indicated for body contouring and removing stubborn fat pockets).

In certain patients, surgical liposuction or alternative treatments may be more appropriate, and, where relevant, you will be advised appropriately.

  • Using different applicators to target different treatment areas

CoolSculpting® has a range of applicators specially designed for specific areas of the body for optimum results and to ensure patient comfort and safety.

For example, the CoolMini™ applicator is particularly ideal for reducing fat under the chin and other small areas on the body, including fat on the inner arms or around the knees.

The CoolAdvantage Petite™ has been specifically designed to treat the upper arms in as little as 35 minutes using two interchangeable contours that are ideal for the unique shape of this area. Because of its small size and shape, the CoolAdvantage Petite™ is also versatile enough to treat small areas of fat in other body areas.

  • How much does CoolSculpting® fat reduction treatment cost?

The price for CoolSculpting® depends on your specific areas of concern, your ultimate treatment objectives goals, and the number of treatments needed to achieve this. Please ask for details.

  • How safe is CoolSculpting® fat freezing treatment?

CoolSculpting® was approved for patient use by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009. CoolSculpting® machines provide carefully controlled cooling and are designed with advanced safety measures. If the built-in sensors detect that the skin is becoming too cold, the system will automatically stop the treatment to prevent any injury.  The treatment has been shown to be both effective and safe and is a leading non-invasive fat-reduction treatment worldwide, with over 7 million CoolSculpting® treatment cycles performed so far.

  • Are there any side effects?

As with any effective medical procedure, there is the potential to experience unexpected side effects. Thankfully, these risks are uncommon to rare, and the procedure is regarded as being significantly safer than surgical liposuction (which itself is a safe procedure when conducted by trained specialists).

Nevertheless, patients have reported vasovagal symptoms, paradoxical hyperplasia (increase rather than decrease in fat), late-onset pain, freeze burn, hyperpigmentation, subcutaneous induration (firmness), and development of hernias. There are also reported incidents of contour deformities, and neuropathic pain. While you are unlikely to experience these side effects, it is important to understand that Coolsculpting® is a medical procedure and should only be carried out by trained specialists with advanced experience in cryolipolysis-based body contouring.

  • Fat freezing for fat reduction: evidence-based results

CoolSculpting® is supported by clinical research and peer-reviewed scientific evidence. At the time of preparing this information, there have been 52 publications evaluating the technology and demonstrating both reliable clinical efficacy and safety. For example, CoolSculpting® has been shown to decrease the number of fat cells in different treatment areas by up to 27% after 6 months.*

Although results will vary between patients depending on several factors, CoolSculpting® overall is a highly effective and safe method for non-surgical fat reduction and was approved by the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) for this indication in 2009.
