Minimally invasive Facelift using advanced radio-frequency technology tighten

FaceTite™ is a next-generation minimally-invasive radio-frequency based treatment for skin laxity that is a ‘no-knife’ alternative to a surgical mini-facelift. FaceTite™ lifts and tightens skin to reduce sagging and improve facial contours, particularly the neck and lower face, for a more youthful definition. Although the skin is noticeably tighter and less saggy within a few days, this tightening process continues to develop over the following months. The best results, therefore, are evident at between 6 to 12 months and remain stable for many years.

FaceTite™ is a complete contouring solution to treat sagging jowls, redefine the jawline, and lift cheeks. A complementary modality, AcuTite™, can be used by Dr Rhobaye to treat small delicate areas such as around the eyes (including festoons) and nasolabial fold fullness, using the same technology. The procedure is often combined with Morpheus 8™ fractional skin and subdermal collagen remodelling to enhance the tightening effect produced by FaceTite™.

Face and neck rejuvenation with FaceTite™

work How does FaceTite™ work?

FaceTite™ is an advanced minimally-invasive skin tightening treatment that uses state-of-the-art directional radio-frequency technology. The energy delivered generates heat in the skin and underlying tissue from the inside-out using an internal electrode placed underneath the skin through a tiny incision, with the energy returning to the machine through an external electrode. This carefully controlled and precise heating process tightens the skin and deeper soft tissue layers with impressive long-term results.

icon-clock How long is the FaceTite™ procedure?

A detailed consultation is undertaken at your first appointment for a tailored treatment strategy assessing your overall skin quality, as well as determining the target treatment areas. The duration of the actual procedure will depend upon the number and size of the facial areas being treated, but on average, takes around 90 minutes to complete. There will also be a short stay afterwards in a recovery area before being discharged home.

icon-needle How comfortable is the treatment?

The procedure is performed using a local anaesthetic alone (for small localised areas) or in combination with sedation (twilight anaesthesia). In both cases, a tumescent technique is used, where the local anaesthetic is mixed with saline (saltwater) fluid and adrenaline. A volume of this wetting solution is then injected into the areas to be treated. This technique provides several benefits, not least being maximum comfort during the procedure, avoiding the need for a general anaesthetic, as well as minimal bleeding due to the effects of the adrenaline.

Although some bruising and swelling still occur, these are significantly less in comparison to a surgical facelift, resulting in far less downtime and faster recovery.

icon-heart How long is the recovery time?

You should be back to your normal activities within a few days to two weeks, depending on the areas treated. You will need to wear an elasticated face compression band for three days, which will reduce any post-procedure swelling. The areas treated will feel somewhat tender for the first week or so, with some mild bruising or swelling. You may even feel numbness which is a temporary effect of the heating of the skin nerves during treatment and can last for a few months.

You may be able to feel small dense lumps under the skin, but these are not normally visible. They are due to subcutaneous tissue heating and will keep contracting 2-3 months after treatment.

exercise When can I exercise?

Following the procedure, light exercise can be resumed after 5-7 days such as gentle cardio (treadmill, walking). More strenuous exercises should be avoided until 2 weeks, and higher impact cardio until 4-6 weeks.

icon-eye When will I see results?

You will see some immediate tightening and lifting after FaceTite™ or AccuTite™ treatment, which will become more visible within the next few days as the swelling starts to settle. However, the results continue to improve over the next 3-4 months and up to a year after your procedure as more collagen is produced. Furthermore, these results may last 5-7 years, or possibly even longer, comparable to a surgical facelift.

Disclaimer: Individual results and reactions may vary and can be affected by factors such as weight loss, stress and metabolism.

  • An overview of the FaceTite™ technology

The FaceTite™ handpiece consists of a pair of connected electrodes, one is placed under the skin through a tiny incision, and the other sits externally on the skin surface.

RF energy is delivered through the tip of the internal active electrode and passes through the subcutaneous tissue and skin up to the external return electrode. This directional RF energy generates a precisely controlled heating gradient which melts the fat, contracts the fibrous septal connective tissue network and tightens the skin at different temperature points optimised for each layer. Both electrodes have a temperature monitor that continuously analyse the deep tissue and skin, ensuring optimal temperature levels are achieved for maximal skin contraction, and to prevent under- or overheating.

The body’s natural production of collagen and elastin is stimulated and regenerated over the following months as part of the natural healing process that is triggered by the controlled heating effect, resulting in long-term contraction and tightening of the skin. Indeed, this safe and effective contouring solution for mild to moderate skin sagging is proven to contract skin by up to 36%*.

  • Benefits of the FaceTite™ system

Radio-frequency is an established energy-based treatment for skin tightening. Most RF systems, however, have been limited by their ability to deliver the RF energy effectively and safely to the target area resulting in inconsistent and often disappointing results.

Heated skin and soft tissue contract: how much they contract depends on the amount of energy (or heat) delivered. Unlike FaceTite™, other RF systems heat the skin externally (from the surface) instead of internally (sub-dermal). Since the skin is less able to withstand heat than the deeper fat and connective tissue layers, these external RF systems can only safely deliver lower levels of heat to the soft tissue and with much more limited penetration to reduce the risk of burns and scarring. This results in less effective heat delivery and consequently, less skin contraction.

With FaceTite™, RF bipolar energy is carefully directed to the area being treated, heating the site from the inside-out allowing the deeper layers to be heated to a higher temperature than the skin across a temperature gradient. This, in turn, allows for more precise treatment with results that compare to a surgical mini-facelift.

  • FaceTite™ versus Ulthera™, HIFU and ULTRAcel™

There are many devices and technologies that claim to tighten skin and treat facial sagging—these work by delivering some form of energy to heat the tissue to stimulate the contraction process. Ulthera™ (‘Ultherapy’), for example, uses ultrasound energy rather than radio-frequency and is one of several HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) devices. Other systems, such as ULTRAcel™, combine both ultrasound and radio-frequency to achieve a similar heating effect. However, a common problem with all of these devices is that they are less effective at delivering the optimum amount of heat energy to the deeper soft tissue layers as the heat also has to pass through the skin (i.e. outside-in), with limiting the effectiveness of the skin tightening process. Consequently, the results produced by these devices are inconsistent with most patients seeing only a mild to moderate improvement and some seeing minimal improvement, if at all. In contrast, FaceTite™ delivers optimal heat directly in the deeper tissue layers (inside-out) and produces a far more substantial skin tightening effect with much more consistent results that are also longer lasting. Consequently, although there any be a role for both Ulthera™ or ULTRAcel™ for certain patients, at present, FaceTite™ is the most effective minimally invasive technology for skin tightening, delivering superior results.

  • Suitability of patients for FaceTite™

FaceTite™ is suitable for most people with moderate sagging and drooping and can achieve impressive facial rejuvenation results. However, as with all elective invasive or minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures, this procedure should be avoided during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Both male and female patients with certain pre-existing medical conditions or taking specific medications may also not be good candidates for FaceTite™, but this will be assessed during the consultation. Your safety is paramount, and you will therefore not be offered this procedure if medically or psychologically unsuitable.

  • Which areas can be treated with FaceTite™?

FaceTite™ can restore a more youthful appearance to various areas of the face:

    • The brow line
    • The periorbital region
    • Nasolabial folds
    • Sagging jowls
    • Double chin and neck area
    • Lifting cheeks
    • Jawline contouring
    • Tightening the neck skin for neck wrinkles and turkey neck
    • Improving fine lines and wrinkles
  • Which areas can be treated with AccuTite™?

AccuTite™ can effectively reduce fat and tighten the skin in harder-to-reach areas such as:

    • The brow line
    • The periorbital region
    • Nasolabial folds
    • Sagging jawline (jowls)
    • Double chins and neck area
  • How safe is FaceTite™

FaceTite™ is one of the most advanced and effective minimally-invasive skin tightening available. It is both approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States, and CE marked in Europe.

The system has powerful and effective built-in safeguards, such as real-time measurements of skin temperature so that only the correct amount of energy is delivered, impedance monitoring, and power cut-off with audible feedback for complete patient safety and comfort. Once the desired cut-off temperature is achieved for maximum contraction of the skin, the energy is switched off.

  • Are there any side effects?

Common side effects include redness and swelling in the treated area. This will soon disappear, and all side effects should be completely gone after a week to ten days.

Patients may experience some numbness which is a temporary effect of the heating of the skin nerves during treatment; this usually resolves completely within 2-3 months. Occasionally, nerve branches that supply facial muscles may be temporarily affected, leading to some muscle weakness and a minor degree of facial asymmetry (such as on smiling). However, this is a short-lived effect and resolves within a few weeks. Patients may also feel small dense lumps under the skin, but they aren’t normally visible. These are due to subcutaneous tissue heating and will keep contracting 2-3 months after treatment.

  • Are there any risks?

Infection is rare but can happen; therefore, the procedure is conducted in a clean, operating theatre environment with antibiotics prescribed post-treatment.

Permanent nerve damage (particularly of the lower facial nerve branches) is a risk, but rare. With the correct technique, caution and experience, the risk is minimal. Burns and scarring are possible as with any treatment that involves heating the tissues, but again the in-built safety mechanisms almost entirely prevent this risk.
