Treatment Overview

stages What are the steps in a HydraFacial MD® PRO©️

At Sloane Clinic, we perform an advanced version of the HydraFacial MD® treatment that uses bespoke clinically proven skincare treatments in combination with world-class LED phototherapy technologies. These are all combined with facial lymphatic drainage and a relaxing 9 point facial pressure massage, delivered by highly experienced and skilled skin specialists – we call this HydraFacial MD® PRO©️. The total procedure length is between 60 to 90min, and patients can go back to work or socialise almost immediately.

Our HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ treatments are composed of several key steps, with each step designed to prepare for the next:

step1 STEP 1 - Initial Cleanse

This first cleanse step prepares the skin for treatment by removing makeup, surface impurities and dirt resulting from environmental pollution that can promote skin inflammation and ageing. The specially formulated cleansers that we use help to hydrate, soothe, repair and restore the skin to its natural state, while also removing the top layer of dead skin cells, deep cleaning the pores and promoting cell renewal.

step2 STEP 2 – Vacuum-Assisted Facial Lymphatic

The lymphatic system bathes our skin cells in lymphatic fluid, which provides hydration and nutrients, as well as being responsible for removing toxins and delivering immune system defence against infections. A sluggish lymphatic system can promote the build-up of toxins in the skin that can lead to inflammatory skin conditions, compromised immunity and most obviously swelling (particularly noticeable under the eyes). The HydraFacial MD® system combines Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) with vacuum pump assistance to help to improve the lymphatic circulation, reduce toxin build-up, promote skin hydration, and reduce facial swelling. It also helps to prepare the skin for the main HydraFacial MD® steps that follow.

step3 STEP 3 - Exfoliate and Deep Cleanse

The next step uses Active-4™️ serum in combination with the Vortex-Fusion® technology and a specially designed tip to gently exfoliate and cleanse at a deeper level than the initial cleanse, leaving the skin feeling soft, smooth and radiant. The Active-4™️ serum contains non-acid exfoliants, soothing and calming extracts, and hydrating elements. It is suitable for all skin types, exfoliating the skin to soften sebum and dislodge dead skin cells while simultaneously promoting skin brightening and firming through its hydrating properties. It detoxifies and replenishes the skin with essential vitamins and minerals. The Active 4™️ serum also contains Glucosamine HCl that helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as algae extract that is rich in protective antioxidants helping to reduce the effects of damaging free radicals in the body produced from environmental exposure.

step4 STEP 4 – Gentle Acid Peel

At this step, 7.5% GlySal™️ peel (combination of 7.5% Glycolic acid and 2% Salicylic Acid) is used to remove even more dead skin cells and help clear congested and oily skin, reducing the build-up of dirt and sebum within the pores.  Since the previous initial deep cleansing and exfoliation steps have already removed a significant amount of the superficial dead skin cells and dirt, the acid peel can act at a deeper level than it would have otherwise reached, which is one of many key benefits of HydraFacial MD® treatment. In effect, it allows a more gentle peel to be used with the same benefit as a stronger peel, allowing it to be used in all skin types. For patients with special skin needs, such as moderate to severe acne, may require a stronger peel concentration as part of a more intense HydraFacial MD® treatment regimen.

step5 STEP 5 – Extractions by Gentle Purging

The next step uses Beta-HD™️ serum in combination with the Vortex-Fusion® technology and a specially designed tip to deeply cleanse the skin and gently extract dirt and sebum from the pores on the nose and T-zone areas, as well as any other areas on your face prone to breakouts. The extraction is by purging, which is much less traumatic than manual extraction by squeezing. The Beta-HD™️ is a specialised solution formulated for all skin types but is particularly beneficial for oily, congested or combination skin. Ingredients such as salicylic acid gently exfoliate the skin preventing the build-up of dirt and sebum in the pores. At the same time, the honey and Spiraea Ulmaria flower extract contain various minerals and amino acids that soften and soothe the skin, promoting hydration.

step6 STEP 6 – Deep Skin Hydration

The Vortex-Fusion® system allows deep delivery of potent hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture into the skin for days (which can be further extended for weeks by at-home aftercare treatments). The Antiox-6™️ solution also contains peptides and protective antioxidants including Vitamins A and E as well as extracts of White Tea, Horse Chestnut and Rosemary. This powerful combination of nourishing ingredients both boosts hydration, detoxifies the skin and reduces inflammation, visible as improved firmness, tone and radiance.

step7 STEP 7 – LED Phototherapy

LED phototherapy or photobiomodulation uses controlled levels of light energy from the red, blue and infrared part of the light spectrum, which stimulates cellular functions to enhance various biological processes with therapeutic effects. It is an evidence-based painless treatment that has multiple clinically proven benefits, including wound healing and pain relief, being used by the US military for enhancing recovery from soft tissue injuries in their soldiers. LED phototherapy can regenerate the skin helping to boost skin complexion and reduce both the signs of ageing and blemishes. Each wavelength of light is absorbed by different targets to stimulate specific skin rejuvenating processes. Red light, for example, is absorbed by mitochondria, which provide energy to the cell. This cellular energy boost can trigger a cascade of beneficial effects that accelerate cell renewal, increase collagen and elastin production and promote skin hydration. The blue light wavelengths also help control acne by targeting the bacteria in the sebaceous glands that cause spots, while being gentle on the skin. The near-infrared light is absorbed deep into the skin, helping to enhance cellular activity with a wide range of rejuvenating benefits. It also helps to improve circulation, leading to more efficient oxygen and nutrient delivery to the skin. These actions can accelerate skin repair, calm inflammation and improve skin barrier protection for sensitive skin.

step8 STEP 8 – Relaxing 9-Point Pressure Massage

HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ is not only a medical-grade skin treatment with proven clinical benefits but is also very relaxing. Our skin specialists enhance this experience further with a 9 point facial pressure massage to help reduce facial muscle tension, improve circulation, and stimulate endorphins (hormones that heighten a sense of euphoria, with sedation and analgesic effects). Indeed, patients often enter a state of calm and fall asleep during treatment.

step9 STEP 9 – Evidence-Based Skin Protection

The final step in the treatment is the application of professional skincare products that protect the skin from environmental exposure (including sun damage). These include a broad-spectrum sunscreen with both UVA and UVB filters and powerful antioxidants that protect against damaging free radicals produced by sunlight. A skincare regime will be provided for home use that is tailored to your specific skin health needs.

boost TAILORED BOOSTER – DermaBuilder™️ for Ageing-related Skin

DermaBuilder™️ is a proprietary multi-peptide serum delivered using the HydraFacial MD® Vortex-Fusion® technology that helps to diminish fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin tone and texture, plump the skin, and enhance skin elasticity and therefore firmness. It is a great additional targeted treatment for anyone wishing to reverse and slow down some of the visible signs of ageing in the skin. DermaBuilder™️ is integrated into the HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ treatment between step 3 and step 5.

boost TAILORED BOOSTER – Britenol™️ for Pigment Reduction

Britenol™️ is a clinically proven treatment for diminishing the appearance of sun-damage related pigmentation and improving overall skin complexion. It contains both Alpha-Arbutin and bearberry extract brighteners as well as Vitamin C antioxidant to brighten and balance skin tone while reducing the appearance of dark spots and sunspots. Britenol™️ is integrated into the HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ treatment between step 3 and step 5 and is also delivered using the Vortex-Fusion® technology.

boost TAILORED BOOSTER – GlySal™️ Modified Acid Peel Protocol for Acne and Acne Scarring

The Acne and Acne Scarring booster treatment is designed to particularly target active acne and acne-related scars using incrementally increasing application durations and strengths (up to 30%) of the GlySal™️ peel. This more intense protocol further reduces the build-up of excess oils and sebum and improves the appearance of acne scars by deeper exfoliation using the salicylic acid and glycolic acid combination. Unlike the other booster treatments, there are no additional steps but rather is a modification of step 4 (Acid Peel) of the HydraFacial MD® procedure. Improvements can be seen from the first treatment; however, optimal results need a course of 6 treatments conducted once a week.

boost TAILORED BOOSTER – ReGen GF™️ for General Skin Health

ReGen GF™️ growth factor booster featuring patented M-007 Fulvate Complex™️ delivery technology contains a proprietary blend of next-generation bio-engineered peptides that mimic growth factors. These peptides help to improve general skin health by boosting collagen and elastin production, capturing toxins and irritants to reduce inflammation, diminishing the appearance of fine lines, accelerating skin repair and enhancing skin hydration.

M-007 Fulvate Complex™️ is a target-specific molecular delivery system that can penetrate the skin barrier, thereby allowing increased bioavailability of key ReGen GF™️ ingredients beneath the surface level. This, in turn, increases the level of biocommunication between the ReGen GF™️ peptides and specific receptors in the skin, thereby significantly improving their absorption leading to faster more visible results.  ReGen GF™️ is integrated into the HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ treatment between step 3 and step 5.

boost TAILORED BOOSTER – PERK Eye™️ for Rejuvenation around the

PERK Eye™️ utilises unique, patented roller-flex technology to gently exfoliate dead skin cells, loosen dirt and oil from the superficial layer of the skin while simultaneously suctioning away those impurities and flexing the pores to deliver key nutrients and protective antioxidants. It is a great treatment for the delicate skin around the eyes, helping to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, reduce puffiness and dark circles, as well as hydrate and brighten the skin. Key ingredients include horse chestnut seed and arnica flower extracts as well as:

Actineyes –  protects the skin from impurities and supports collagen health, improving the firmness of the skin and reducing under-eye bags.

Aldavine™️ 5X – maintains capillary health to minimise puffiness around the eyes and reduce pigmentation that causes dark circles

Phytomoist – improves hydration and overall suppleness of the skin

The first treatment is professionally delivered in-clinic using the PERK™️ system, taking under 10 minutes. The results are then prolonged and boosted for up to a month with the same PERK™️ roller-ball device as a take-home booster serum that is applied daily. Results can be seen after one treatment, although a course of 3 treatments or more spread monthly is recommended for optimal results.

boost TAILORED BOOSTER – PERK™️ Lips for Revitalising the Lips

Lips are especially prone to damage and dehydration, resulting in dry, cracked skin and mucosa and volume loss. PERK Lips™️ utilises unique, patented roller-flex technology to gently exfoliate dead skin cells from the superficial layer of the lip while simultaneously infusing key nutrients such as peppermint oil and peony extract as well as protective antioxidants. It is a great treatment to revitalise and gently plump the lips as well as improve lip texture, colour and hydration.  It is also an excellent accompaniment to lip fillers, helping to improve the overall appearance of the lips.

The first treatment is professionally delivered in-clinic using the PERK™️ system, taking under 10 minutes. The results are immediate but can prolonged and boosted for up to a month with the same PERK™️ roller-ball device as a take-home booster serum that is applied daily. Treatments can be repeated every month or as and when needed to maintain lip health.

  • How long is the HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ treatment?

The HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ treatment typically takes 75 minutes. Some of the optional tailored booster treatments can extend this duration by a further 10 to 15 minutes (i.e. up to 90 minutes). An important advantage of the HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ treatment is that it is highly customisable. For busy patients wishing to have a shorter duration treatment (such as 45 to 60 minutes), we can modify the treatment protocol accordingly to suit their needs and time restrictions.

  • When will I see results?

Visible results can appear immediately after a HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ treatment, although there may be some very mild redness, which typically settles within an hour. However, the main changes develop over the next 2-3 days, with a noticeable improvement in the overall skin complexion. Your skin will start to feel smoother, tighter and look more hydrated and radiant. The pores will appear smaller, with significantly fewer blackheads, dirt and sebum. For specific conditions such as acne, acne scarring, pigmentation, rosacea, fine lines and wrinkles, the main visible changes occur after a course of treatments, with incremental improvements after each treatment.

  • How often should I do a HydraFacial MD® PRO©️

Your skin is constantly changing and regenerates approximately every 27 days. Evidence-based skincare with regular maintenance is essential in maintaining the health and vitality of the skin. We would therefore typically recommend a HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ treatment once a month. An analogy that we like to give is that of the gym – you may get some benefit from going once, but the main benefits come from regular exercise. Specific advanced tailored treatments have to be performed in a more intense weekly protocol for 6 weeks, followed by monthly maintenance treatment. These include the GlySal™️ Modified Acid Peel for acne and acne scarring, Britenol™️ for pigment reduction, and DermaBuilder™️ for ageing-related skin damage.

  • How does HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ differ from a standard HydraFacial MD

Many clinics that offer HydraFacial MD® are, in fact, providing substantially ‘cut down’ versions of the treatment where they have removed many of the key beneficial elements (similar to the HydraFacial MD® Express, sometimes with even fewer steps). Our HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ treatment, on the other hand, is a modified, expanded and advanced form of the classic HydraFacial MD®. We use professional medical-grade skincare from Skinceuticals and ZO Health at different stages of the treatment, in combination with the standard HydraFacial MD® products, to further enhance skin health with premium clinically proven products. We not only use a more advanced LED phototherapy device incorporating best-in-class technology but apply it three times longer duration than the standard protocol for a more profound rejuvenating effect. The success of the hydrafacial treatment is very much practitioner dependent relying on their technique and skills in using the technology and correctly applying the products. Our HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ treatments are always performed by our senior aestheticians or doctors who have extensive training and experience in delivering HydraFacial MD® treatments to the highest standards. Our HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ patients are also assessed using our advanced VISIA skin complexion technology to assess and monitor treatment progress. Finally, we always strive to promote relaxation during the treatments, whether this is the technique used to apply the products or incorporating, for example, 9 point facial pressure massage. HydraFacial MD® PRO©️ , therefore, an elite version of the classic HydraFacial MD® offering the highest standards of treatment in a relaxing and pleasant manner.

  • What is the difference between HydraFacial MD® and Microdermabrasion?

HydraFacial MD® is based on hydradermabrasion, which is an evolution from a common non-surgical skin resurfacing procedure known as microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion uses an abrasive micro-crystal or diamond tip in combination with a vacuum to unclog the pores and remove outer layers of dead skin cells, dirt and oils from the skin. It can also improve the skin radiance and fading dark spots and other forms of pigmentation. However, the abrasive tips combined with the pulling action can be harsh on the skin, leading to a rough texture, dryness, irritation, redness and inflammation. Indeed, there is debate amongst dermatologists as to whether microdermabrasion does more harm than good since it can potentially leave ‘micro-tears’ in the skin. Furthermore, while it may work well for congested, oily skin, it is not advised for moderate to severe acne as it can make the condition worse. It is also not as effective on the deeper layers of the skin and therefore has a minimal effect on fine lines and scars.

While microdermabrasion is a single procedure, HydraFacial MD® is multiple procedures combined synergistically, with each step enhancing the effect of the next, to provide total skin rejuvenation. These steps include cleansing, exfoliation, infusions of serums, lymphatic massage and LED light therapy. It uses a specially designed spiral tip that circulates fluid creating a vortex effect to exfoliate the skin (known as hydradermabrasion), remove dead skin cells, dirt, oil and impurities while simultaneously infusing the skin with hydrating and protective nutrients. Consequently, HydraFacial MD® is much more gentle than microdermabrasion, meaning that it can be used in all skin types including patients with sensitive or rosacea type skin, leaving the skin soft, hydrated and supple with far less inflammation. You might experience some mild redness after the treatment, but this typically resolves within an hour. Furthermore, as it has multiple steps that target different aspects of skin damage to a deeper level than microdermabrasion, it can effectively treat a greater variety of skin concerns more, including fine line, wrinkles and moderate to severe acne.

  • What are the indications for HydraFacial MD®, and can I be treated if I have sensitive skin?

HydraFacial MD® is a very gentle non-abrasive skin resurfacing, skin conditioning and skin health treatment. In addition to improving overall skin complexion and radiance, HydraFacial can be tailored to safely and effectively address multiple specific skin concerns. These include:

Mild to Moderate Acne and mild acne scars

    Oily or congested skin

Pigmentation, blemishes and uneven skin tone

Sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, mild skin laxity

    Dry or dehydrated skin

Mild to moderate rosacea and sensitive skin

  • Are there any specific skin conditions that are contraindications to HydraFacial MD®?

HydraFacial MD® is not recommended for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is also not suitable for patients with an allergy to salicylic acid (such as found in Aspirin) or shellfish as they are ingredients found in some of the primary steps of the treatment. Patients with moderate to severe acne will often require more aggressive medical treatments and should seek the advice of their medical dermatologist. Similarly, patients with moderate to deep acne scarring will have little to no improvement unless combined with subcisional or excisional procedures or deeper resurfacing from more intense treatments such as medical grade peels and ablative lasers. Patients with sensitive skin tend to flare up with even the mildest of skincare products as they lack sufficient skin barrier protection. These patients may, therefore, experience a more profound degree of redness or possibly flaking following treatment. However, this will tend to become progressively less severe after each treatment as the skin barrier is gradually rebuilt.
